Simultaneous 5 Axis vs. 3+2 Axis CNC Machining

5-Axis CNC machining excels at precision complex parts, while 3+2 Axis CNC machining balances cost-efficiency and versatility for semi-complex components.

Simultaneous 5-Axis Machining

3+2 Axis Machining (Positional 5-Axis)

Movement

All five axes (X, Y, Z, A, B) move continuously and simultaneously in a coordinated manner during the cutting process.

The two rotational axes (A, B) first tilt and lock the tool or workpiece to a fixed angle. Cutting is then performed by the three linear axes (X, Y, Z) in a 3-axis mode; the rotary axes remain stationary during machining.

Machining Stability

Maintains a more stable tool engagement and load, resulting in superior surface finish. However, the dynamic process places extremely high demands on machine accuracy, control systems, and programming.

Essentially 3-axis machining, offering high stability with lower requirements for the machine and programming. However, cutting parameters may need adjustment for different tilt angles.

Suitable Parts

- Complex 3D contoured components (e.g., aerospace turbine blades, impellers, curved medical implants).
- Parts with deep cavities, undercuts, or multiple intersecting surfaces.
- High-precision parts requiring minimal setup (no repositioning).

- Multi-faceted parts (e.g., mold bases, brackets, housing components) with features on multiple angled faces.
- Parts with drilled/tapped holes distributed across non-parallel planes.
- Semi-complex parts where continuous 5-axis motion is unnecessary (cost-saving alternative).

Advantages of 5-Axis CNC Machining

Compared to traditional 3-axis machining, the core advantages of 5-axis CNC machining lie in its unparalleled flexibility, precision, and efficiency for complex projects.

Complex Geometric

Capable of machining parts with complex surfaces, deep cavities, and undercuts (e.g., impellers, turbine blades) in a single setup.

High Precision

A single setup avoids handling errors from repeated, plus our in-process inspection system performs real-time monitoring of part dimensions.

Superior Surface Finish

Allows the use of shorter tools and maintains the optimal cutting angle, improving surface finish while reducing tool vibration and wear.

Improved Efficiency

Enables direct machining of inclined surfaces and holes by tilting the spindle or table, eliminating time for multiple setups and fixture adjustments.

Cost-Effectiveness

Reduces the need for complex dedicated fixtures, better tool paths and machining strategies can reduce waste material.

Unmatched Flexibility

Faster programming and adjustments for parts with multi-angle features, making it ideal for prototyping, small-batch & full-scale production.
